HRSFANS Regional Activities and Mailing Lists

Greetings, HRSFANS all–

We’d like to briefly update the body politic on the status of our ongoing efforts to foster local HRSFANS communities:

1. We’ve created regional email-lists for the areas of Los Angeles, San Francisco, the Northwest, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, and New York, so that people who live in these areas can share information about local events of interest, pursue geeky activities in congenial company, and generally have a good time together. If you would like to join one of these lists, you can sign up at http://www.hrsfans.org/about/. If you’d like us to create a mailing list for your area, please let us know at contact at hrsfans.org.

2. We’ve begun a search of “regional liasons”, who will work with us to stimulate HRSFANS activity in these areas. We’ve started discussion with several intrepid volunteers, but if you’re interested, we’d still love to hear from you!

What SIG will you start?

So far we have two SIGs that have flourished via the magic of the Internet — Writer’s SIG meets once a month via Skype, and Magic SIG meets weekly via Teamspeak. But there’s so much more we could do! Will you start the HRSFANS MST3K SIG, and collaborate on writing dialogue for a showing at the next reunion? What about a board game SIG that meets online to play Catan? One popular strategy for HRSFA has always been to call whatever it is you’re already doing a SIG — but maybe you’d like to find out who else is in WoW SIG, or recruit more members for RTS SIG? Float your idea by sending it to Kevin Gold (treasurer at hrsfans.org), and the Board will help make it happen.

20th Anniversary Fundraising Campaign Successful

HRSFA now has an endowment, or more precisely a small share (a little over $25,000) of Harvard University’s endowment: approximately half of this money came from the proceeds of the last few Vericons, while the remainder came from generous individualdonations and purchases of HRSFA eternal memberships. This chunk of money will produce yearly returns based on the performance of the general endowment: a smaller percentage will be distributed to HRSFA each year, while the remainder will be automatically reinvested in order to produce greater future returns. While the endowment is currently sized to just about pay for the general annual expenses (munchies for SIGs, subsidized outings, etc.), over time this account will grow and will allow HRSFA to do more for its members than ever before.

Thank you to each and every one of you who donated your time, energy, and money to the recent reunion events and fundraising campaign. We are planning a party in honor of the first disbursement from the endowment at which we will unveil the plaque commemorating our donors. Stay tuned for details.

Regional mailing lists!

We now have several regional HRSFANS lists for people to sign up for and organize regional activities! Please go ahead and sign up!

We’re looking for people who want to moderate each of these lists–and who can potentially be local leaders. Let us know if you’d like to help organize your local Hrsfans.

This is your Boarding call…

The Executive Committee is going to be appointing the rest of the Board (an estimated 4 new members) within the next couple of weeks. If you would like to submit your name for consideration, please send us an email to that effect.

In serving on the Board, you will be accepting a substantial share of responsibility for the growth and flourishing of HRSFANS over the next three years, with the reward that…well, if everything goes well, HRSFANS will grow and flourish. There’s a great deal to be done, and since the first step will be to formulate a plan of action, we can’t yet be very specific about what exactly the job will entail (though the candidacy statements of the new Executive Board might provide a few clues). Almost certainly, it will involve initiating and engineering awesome activities via the internet and across the country. Just as almost certainly, it’ll involve endless discussion threads to read, ill-defined tasks to negotiate, colleagues not to strangle, and deadlines to scramble over. If the prospect of the former makes the latter seem worth it to you, please consider emailing us about joining the Board. If not, well… there should be plenty of chance to do awesome stuff with HRSFANS without serving on the Board. That being, after all, the object of the exercise.

***Note: Generally we’re looking for Board Members-At-Large, who may evolve impressive titles as responsibilities get parcelled out over time. But also, in particular, we’re looking for a new Webmaster. Since HRSFANS is going to be relying heavily upon the internet’s capacity to facilitate networking and socializing from afar, this position is especially critical, and will require both dedication and technical expertise. Please let us know if you’re interested.

We want to move along with Board selection, so if you’re interested, please let us know by SUNDAY, APRIL 13. If you could include a brief statement about why you’d like to serve on the board, etc., that would be spiffy.
