Down-home Halloween Cooking

This week, I was cooking a Halloween-themed meal, and so was looking for dishes I could make.  The best example I found was from I Make Projects. He has some really impressive-looking and disturbing foods, including a very realistic bleeding heart.

The other reason I’m posting this is the larger site, imakeprojects.com–it’s a collection of projects done by Don Papp, who is trying to make a living doing one-shot creative projects (both technical and not, as you can see from his range of projects). I think that’s a really interesting vocational idea (I’m always curious about atypical ways of living), and I hope it’s working well for him.

Kicking it off with xkcd

The first blog post!

Eventually, I hope this blog will introduce you to lots of neat things you didn’t know of before. But for the first post, I thought I’d begin with a classic: one of my favorite xkcd comics.

In case there’s anyone out there who hasn’t yet discovered xkcd, let this be a wake-up call! The comic, written and drawn by Randall Munroe, describes itself as “a webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language.” That’s accurate as far as it goes, but what’s truly noteworthy is Munroe’s wit as he jokes about a wide range of unabashedly geeky topics using relatively simple artwork and few words. The Redwall comic linked to above is no exception, combining fantasy epics with public key cryptography.

Though it doesn’t contain much that regular readers won’t already know, I enjoyed this article about xkcd in the New York Times. It’s great to see a “geek-cult-hero” (as they describe him) getting mainstream publicity.

Introducing the shiny new HRSFANS blog!

HRSFANS is starting a blog! This blog was jointly inspired by the HRSFANS Index to the Awesome on the Internet and Boing Boing. The idea is to post links and short discussions of things that we like, with the goal of sharing these things both within HRSFANS and with the fan community at large.

You can read the blog right here, or follow our RSS feed.

We’re looking for people to contribute to the blog! If you’re interested, you can find out more about it on the HRSFANS wiki.

We’d also love suggestions for additions to our Blogroll. If you have a blog you’d like us to link to (whether your own blog or just one that you think our readers would enjoy), please let us know.
